Urge US Senators to
Support Federal Marriage Amendment

June 30, 2004

ISSUE:  The federal marriage amendment would define marriage as between one man and one woman.  The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on this proposed amendment to the U. S. Constitution, Senate Joint Resolution 30, the week of July 12th.

BACKGROUND:  There is growing concern over the movement to declare same sex unions as the legal equivalent of marriage.  Marriage is part of the divine plan of God who created men and women equal but different from each other in order to bring children into the world to form a union of love and lifelong commitment.  The Administrative Committee of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement, "Between Man and Woman: Questions and Answers about Marriage and Same Sex Unions" to educate the faithful about the meaning of marriage and its value to society (www.usccb.org/laity/marriage/samesexunions.htm).  States already have and under this amendment would retain the authority to legalize civil unions or domestic partnerships.

ACTION:  Contact your Senators and ask them to sign on as a co-sponsor and support SJR 30.  Please ask them to oppose any efforts to "filibuster" and allow this issue to come to a vote.
