LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT

MESSAGE: SB 224, eliminating the death penalty as an option for juveniles under the age of 18, passed the Senate and has been sent to the House. Juveniles under the age of 18 are not considered adults by society so they cannot sign contracts, serve on juries, purchase tobacco or make many decisions we deem inappropriate because of immaturity. Scientists have discovered that brain development continues into the early 20’s, particularly the area regulating self-control, judgment and emotions. Tomorrow is the last day of session so the bill needs to be heard.

ACTION: Please take up and pass Senate Bill 224.  Florida should join the list of 31 states that do not execute minors under the age of 18.
