Background:  SJR 2178 (Diaz de la Portilla), allowing parental notification of abortion, is on the Senate Special Order Calendar and is scheduled to be taken up this week, as early as Wednesday.  Senate leadership acknowledges that the bill in its present form will need to be amended to meet Constitutional muster.  There will be pressure from some Senators to put exceptions into the amendment, which would weaken it and leave uncertainty as to interpretation.  Exceptions and judicial by-passes are appropriate for legislation but should not be placed in the Florida Constitution. 

Action:  It is important that all Senators hear from as many constituents as possible now.  From the link below, please email or call your Senator, at the Tallahassee office, and urge him or her to pass out a clean and clear amendment without exceptions, allowing parents to be notified in advance of a child's intent to have an abortion.
