STATEMENT ON
THE PARTIAL-BIRTH ABORTION VOTE

September 26, 1996

The moral bankruptcy of this nation's abortion policy has been strikingly demonstrated by the Senate's vote to not overrride President Clinton's veto of the partial-birth abortion law.  The killing of a baby who has been delivered and exposed to the new sensation of cold air, and whose head has been restrained in the birth canal while a physician administers a mortal wound to the skull, is abhorrent.   If this is legal, no other life can be saved; no other abuse can be consistently condemned.

This vote causes us deep sorrow.  At the same time, we are thankful and proud of Representative Charles Canady, the original sponsor of this legislation, Senator Connie Mack and the other fourteen Representatives from Florida, who cast votes to protect the lives of these defenseless children, and thank the members of both political parties for their support in overriding this veto.  The vote of Senator Bob Graham in favor of this abhorrent procedure is deeply disappointing.
