Tragic Decision Of Roe v. Wade Marks 27th Year
Tallahassee, FL -- Calling it a decision that they have "long condemned and deeply regret," the Catholic Bishops of Florida today issued a statement marking the 27th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. "This decision removed protection of law from the unborn and launched an unprecedented attack on mothers and children in this country."
Noting the reversal of the U.S. Supreme Court in its unjust, deplorable decision of Dred Scot, the Bishops stated their "trust that our ongoing efforts to restore protection for unborn children will one day bear fruit."
Citing the "growing tendency in our society in which the powerful predominate and the powerless are set aside or eliminated," the Bishops expressed their concern for unborn children, the elderly and incurably ill, and for the many other people relegated to margins of society by consumerism and materialism. "These attitudes and actions must be overcome and the Church and all people of good will must persevere in advocating a consistent ethic of life."
Commending all those who choose life in difficult situations and continuing their pledge to reach out to all those who suffer from painful abortion experiences, the Bishops stated that "Every human life, at every stage of development, is a gift from God." They pledged their continued defense of this truth and as well as their continued effort and prayer that Roe v. Wade will one day be overcome.
