Tallahassee, FL (May 3, 2000) -- The Florida Catholic Conference applauds the steadfast commitment by Representative Randy Ball and Senator Anna Cowin to protect women and children in Florida. Passage of the ban on partial birth abortions will prohibit the intentional killing of innocent infants by a barbaric procedure and will protect women from a procedure which threatens a woman’s life and future fertility. With the House’s 84-32 passage of SB 160 today, this bill now goes to the Governor.

The human family will make little progress dealing with capital punishment, poverty, euthanasia and other attacks on human life and dignity, if we allow the routine destruction of our youngest and most helpless unborn sisters and brothers. We applaud the efforts of the Florida Legislature, the bill sponsors, and the faithful citizenship that helped ensure passage of this public policy. We urge all to continue the effort to protect women, children and families and we look forward to the day when physicians are required to give factual information to women and parents of minors considering an abortion .

On behalf of the more than two million Catholics of Florida, we thank each Senator and Representative that voted yes to ban the intentional killing of children halfway outside a woman’s body, a procedure ordinary people can see is a form of infanticide.
