Tallahassee -- As the 2001 Legislative Session gets underway, the Florida Catholic Conference of Bishops released its annual Public Policy Issues paper, outlining its positions on issues affecting the life and dignity of the human person, the needs of the poor and vulnerable, and each person's rights and responsibilities, to one another and society.

The paper addresses the Church's teaching on today's most pressing issues, and is divided into categories pertaining to life and death legislation, social concerns related to the budget, children, adoption, education, health care, and much more.

D. Michael McCarron, Executive Director of the Florida Catholic Conference of Bishops said,   "The Church's role in the political order is, among other things, to highlight the moral dimensions of public policy, and to participate in debate on matters affecting the common good.  These public policy positions reflect the Catholic Church's teaching on the inherent dignity of all human life and promote a 'consistent ethic of life' from its very beginning to natural death."

The paper is available at the Florida Catholic Conference's web site and may be accessed from the 2001 Legislative Page at: http://www.flacathconf.org/Legislativeissues/Legispage.htm
