Tallahassee - Despite legal
challenges, there was cause for celebration when President Bush signed the
partial birth abortion ban into law in 2003. Unfortunately, the sobering facts
remain, on this 31st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision,
that close to 45 million babies have died since 1973, note the Bishops of
Florida in their annual statement calling for an end to abortion.
The Catholic Church continues to offer material and emotional assistance to
women who are feeling alone and unprepared to support a baby. Clergy and
volunteers offer men and women opportunities for reconciliation and healing
through post-abortion counseling programs available in the dioceses and
parishes.
“In Florida, the escalation of abortions to almost 90,000 a year is cause for
grave concern. The Florida Supreme Court decision this year that denied parents
the right to be notified that their minor daughter will undergo a procedure with
potentially serious physical and mental health consequences is one more strike
against us in our fight to stop abortion, “ said Sheila Hopkins, Associate for
Social Concerns.
In their statement, the Bishops commend the Governor and Florida lawmakers for
defending the sanctity of life.
