Catholic Bishops of Florida
Recognize 36th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
Tallahassee
– The bishops of Florida’s seven
(arch)dioceses issue their annual statement recognizing the
January 22, 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.
The bishops lament that despite recent court cases that provide
some limitation on the taking of innocent life, abortion is
still the law of the land.
The consequences of abortion go
beyond the unborn child. The bishops state, “The truth is
abortion kills not only the tiny child conceived in the womb but
also injures the mother, leaving her to cope with the emotional
and physical pain. A father involved in an abortion decision
must also deal with post-abortion feelings of sadness and
depression.”
Additionally, the bishops speak to
the role of Catholics in addressing future legislation that
would promote abortion by stating, “Faithful
Catholics and responsible citizens
must oppose any and
all attempts to incrementally pass these destructive and evil
laws.”
